Why do the start and end dates shift within a cycle?

Saturn turns retrograde roughly once a year for about four and a half months. This produces genuine multiple dates for a single phase boundary. A cycle can technically “start” on one date, pause while Saturn retreats into the previous sign, and resume on a later date. Why do Sade Sati dates differ between websites?
Two identifiable factors cause almost all disagreement: the ayanamsa a calculator uses, and whether it smooths Saturn’s retrograde re-entries.
- Ayanamsa differences produce small shifts. The ayanamsa is the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Lahiri is the Indian standard, but calculators using Raman, Krishnamurti or another ayanamsa place Saturn’s ingress a day or two differently. This matters only at the exact boundary of a phase.
- Smoothing produces large shifts. This is the bigger cause. Many calculators round a fragmented retrograde transit into one continuous date range, which looks tidier and is wrong by up to four months. A calculator that reports the true windows will disagree with one that smooths them — and the honest one is the one showing more dates, not fewer.
