During those four and a half months Kumbha is genuinely outside Sade Sati, because Saturn sits in Aries — the 3rd sign from Aquarius — rather than in the 2nd. Why does this depend on the moon sign and not the sun sign?
Sade Sati is measured from the natal Moon because the transit is defined by Saturn’s position relative to it — the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon, not from the Sun or the Ascendant. Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the reference point for mental and emotional conditions, which is the domain this transit is held to affect.
The practical consequence is that the sign printed in a newspaper horoscope is usually the wrong one to use. Sun-sign astrology and Vedic moon-sign astrology use different reference points and different zodiacs, so a person who reads “Leo” in a Sun-sign column may have a Cancer or Virgo Moon and an entirely different Sade Sati schedule.
