The backward motion is an optical effect, not a real reversal. Earth, on its faster inner orbit, periodically overtakes Saturn, and during that overtaking Saturn appears to slip backwards against the background stars — much as a slower car seems to move backwards when you pass it. Does Sade Sati pause during Saturn retrograde?
No. Sade Sati does not pause or end simply because Saturn is retrograde — the transit continues as long as Saturn remains in a Sade Sati sign. Retrograde changes the texture of the period, not its status.
What the tradition does say is that a retrograde Saturn works differently in kind. It is read as a review period: better suited to renegotiation, repair, revisiting unfinished matters and internal consolidation than to launching new commitments. Why do honest retrograde windows matter?
Because smoothing them away makes a calculator’s dates wrong by up to four months, and this is the single biggest source of disagreement between Sade Sati calculators. A calculator that rounds a fragmented transit into one clean range looks tidier and is less accurate. One that shows the true windows will disagree with it — and the honest one is the one showing more dates, not fewer.
